At a time when Florida is focused on giving, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is focused on taking. She stands indicted and is accused of siphoning millions in emergency relief funds meant for Floridians in crisis, and is now playing the victim while asking those same Floridians to open their wallets again.
According to the federal indictment, Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of abusing FEMA emergency relief funds, allegedly routing millions through multiple accounts until the money ultimately benefited her congressional campaign. Rather than step aside, she has chosen to fundraise off the indictment, sending click-bait emails and texts portraying herself as the victim.
“When you’re indicted for allegedly taking $5 MILLION in disaster relief from Floridians who needed help, you don’t ask them to bankroll you more with donations, you resign,” said Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power. “This is worse than Scrooge or the Grinch. There’s no remorse, no accountability, and no apology—just a grift. Floridians deserve better.”
The Republican Party of Florida calls on Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick to step down immediately.
And where are Florida Democrats Jared Moskowitz and Maxwell Frost? Their refusal to condemn this conduct and demand her resignation speaks volumes. They will hear from voters in November.
