The Republican Party of Florida strongly condemns the decision by Senate Democrats in Washington, D.C., to vote against critical funding for the Department of Homeland Security — a move that undermines efforts to secure our airports, seaports, and borders, combat fentanyl trafficking, and protect American communities.
Funding for homeland security supports essential agencies including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and other programs responsible for stopping illegal immigration, dismantling human trafficking networks, and intercepting deadly narcotics entering our country.
“Americans clearly understand the need to fund our nation’s safety and security. It is beyond comprehension that Democrats would choose political theater over public safety,” said Evan Power, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. “Voting against funding for the Department of Homeland Security is a vote against the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our nation.”
Power noted that Florida communities have experienced the consequences of the border crisis under the Biden administration, including increased fentanyl trafficking and added pressure on local law enforcement — challenges that began to be addressed during the first year of President Donald J. Trump’s administration.
Democrats also voted against restoring pay and resources for critical agencies including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA, and the U.S. Secret Service.
“Republicans are committed to fully funding the agencies that stop cartels, prevent human trafficking, and keep dangerous criminals out of our country,” Power added. “It is reckless for Democrats to vote against these essential security resources and the best interests of the people of Florida and the United States.”
